Home Remedies for Anal Fissures

Sometimes the area around the anus becomes burst and sore which causes harsh pain and itching in case of bowel movement. This itching or rash is called anal or rectal fissure. The problem of constipation is the main reason behind this tearing of anal fissure, this is due to when you pass hard stool during constipation, and it passes out by tearing the lining of the anus.

Other causes through which people suffer this problem may be diarrhea; inflammation of the anus, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Ulcerative colitis, draining during childbirth, Crohn’s disease, tight anal muscles and sometimes it may be due to the sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis or herpes.

Some of the symptoms are shown if you have anal fissures such as severe anal pain for a long or short period of time; notice the bleeding of bright red color when you pass stools.

These conditions are quite uncomfortable and irritable. But do not worry; this problem can be settle down by doing some reliable home remedies by your own help. These remedies will help in reducing the pain within a week or two. But in case, if you do not find any good change, consult your doctor as early as possible. Here are the remedies for anal fissures.

1.  Olive Oil

Olive oil is greasy and contains healthy fats. Applying olive oil will help to pass the stool early by eliminating the bowel movement. On the other hand, anti-inflammatory properties are also present in the olive oil which works to reduce the pain of anal fissures.
  • Take equal amounts of olive oil, honey and bees wax in a bowl.
  • Mix these three things together well.
  • Place the bowl in a microwave until you see that the wax is completely melted.
  • After that place it in an air so it becomes cool down.
  • Apply this mixture on the affected parts.
  • Repeat the remedy for few times daily.

2.  Aloe Vera

Aloe vera shows an excellent function according to the healing purpose. If you use aloe vera then you will gradually feel relief from pain. The damaged skin will also be repaired.

It has been established in 2014 by an American and European Scientists that aloe vera present in the topical cream would be reliable for the chronic diseases and fissures.
  • Take an aloe vera leaf and cut it off for extracting the gel.
  • Apply some gel on the affected area.
  • Do this remedy few times a day.

3.  Hot Sitz Bath

Hot sitz bath actually works as a relieving agent because taking bath will help increasing the blood flow in the anal area due to which the minor tears or bursting will be healed by repairing damaged tissues. It will also reduce pain and swelling.
  • Fill a tub with warm water.
  • Add some drops of lavender essential oil and mix it well with water.
  • Sit under the tub for about 20 minutes.
  • Take hot sitz bath for three times a day.

4.  Comfrey

Comfrey is also an herb which also works to heal the wounds or tearing around the skin. It is also found to be great for anal fissures and heals it completely. The roots and leaves, both possess beneficial properties which cause the tissues to repair and promote the growth and development of cells. In this way it helps in quickens the healing mechanism.
  • Take a cup filled with water and add 1 tbsp of dried comfrey.
  • Cover a cup with a lid then keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  • Strain out the solution then allow it to cool down.
  • Apply this solution on the affected areas to clean the wounds.
  • You can also use a comfrey tea.
  • Comfrey ointments are also available on the medical stores so you can directly apply this on the affected parts for at least 3 times a day.

5.  Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is also great for anal fissures. Triglycerides are present in the coconut oil so this can easily be accumulated in the skin and keeps the area to start the healing procedure.
  • Apply coconut oil directly on the anal fissures for 3 times a day.
  • If you are going through the constipation problem then try to add the coconut oil in your diet also.

6.  L-Arginine Gel

L-arginine or arginine is an amino acid that helps in generating the healing process of anal fissures by increasing the nitric oxide flow to the targeted parts.

A 2005 study has showed that L-arginine gel heals the anal fissures without any side effects. The patients who are not responded to isisorbide dinitrate would also be given the arginine gel.

Apply over-the-counter L-arginine gel ointment, available from the medical store few times daily.

7.  Apple Cider Vinegar

Constipation is the main cause of severe pain of anal fissures and itching which would be worse gradually. It can be easily treated with the help of apple cider vinegar.

A substance present in apple cider vinegar called pectin which is easily soluble in water so it directly effects on the bowel movements and improves the digestion.

  • Take raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and add it in a glass of water.
  • You also have an option to add a little amount of honey to taste.
  • Drink this mixture twice daily.

8.  Flaxseed

Flaxseed is always available at home so you can easily use it any time. Omega-3 fatty acid is present in the flaxseeds in a highly amount and helps in the treatment of constipation which is the cause of anal fissures.
  • Take 1 tbsp of flaxseed powder and add it in a glass of water.
  • Drink this solution once daily before going to bed.
  • This solution has a power to regulate your bowel movements.
  • Flaxseed capsules can also be taken optionally. Consult a doctor for the proper dosage.

9. Fiber

Taking a high fiber diet will regulate the bowel movements. Fiber will softens the anal area and softer stools will be passed easily without pressuring yourself. The area around the anal will not be ruptured then.
  • Include foods enriched with fiber in your diet like oatmeal, prunes, legumes, spinach, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, isabgol. Psyllium, etc.
  • You can also take fiber supplements after consulting your doctor.
Note down that after taking psyllium in your diet, do not forget to drink more and more water whole of the day. It reduces the gastrointestinal discomforts.

10.  Hygiene

It is the first requirement to maintain the proper hygiene to avoid the anal fissures. You should keep your anal area clean and dry because if the area is moistened then there must be the risk of infection caused by bacteria.
  • After passing the stools, clean the area with the toilet paper or wipes. Do not use scented wipes because it can cause irritation.
  • Gently apply some of the baby powder around the affected area after taking a bath.
  • Wear loose clothes and underwear to keep the area circulated with air.
  • Do not sit in the same position for a long time, it can cause moisture to buildup in the anal area.

Additional Tips

  • Do not let the new and open tears around the anal areas to develop by avoiding straining during bowel movements.
  • Anal fissures can attack the infants so change their diapers frequently to avoid this.
  • In case of diarrhea, get the treatment immediately.
  • Avoid foods that can cause constipation such as white rice, bananas, cheese, chocolate, red meat, fried foods and chips.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated so that the stools will pass softly.
  • The physical activity like exercising for at least 30 minutes will also regulate the bowel movements properly and so that the blood flow will be increased. You can do stretching, yoga, walking, housework or gardening.
  • Avoid riding on the bike, do not lift heavy weight that requires you to strain.
