Home Remedies for Anal Itching
Anal itching is scientifically called as pruritus ani, which
is a common problem among both men and women though it is more common in men. It
occurs at any age but mostly it seems to be common between the age of 30 and
50.
The cause of anal itching is basically the skin or internal
medical issues. Skin-related causes might be a topic dermatitis, excess friction
in the anal area, psoriasis, excessive sweat production or moisture around the
anus, exposure to certain chemical-bases perfumes or dyes and improper wiping
after excretion.
Whereas, the medical causes would be food allergies, anal
tumors, constipation, diarrhea, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, fecal incontinence,
sexually transmitted fungal and yeast infections.
If you are considering above of the mentioned problems, you
are surely suffering the anal itching problem and this is one the main
symptoms. Other symptoms of pruritus ani are dryness, burning, redness,
soreness, ulcers, swelling, and rash around the anal region. Symptoms may
survive temporary or for a long period, it all depends on the cause.
Anal itching is really an embarrassing situation but on the
other hand, it is easy to treat staying at home using some simple
easy-to-follow home remedies. You can seek medical advice if you are getting
the situation worse and unbearable. So here are the remedies given below:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
If anal itching is the cause of yeast and fungal infections,
it can be settled with apple cider vinegar which is good to control the infection. It helps in alkalizing the body.
- In a glass of water, mix 2 tbsp of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Drink this mixture two times daily.
- Another thing you can do is add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar in a hot bath of tub. Soak your body in this bathwater for about 20 minutes. Use this once daily.
2. Garlic
Garlic helps in treating the anal itching and helps in
reducing the intestinal worms which is the main cause of the anal itching.
Garlic contains antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties which is
useful in the case of any kind of infection responsible for this problem.
- Eat 3 cloves of raw garlic on an empty stomach daily for one week.
- Or else, you can boil 2 crushed garlic cloves in ½ cup of milk. Drink this on an empty stomach for a week.
3. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the best remedy to control the anal itching
or any kind of itching. It soothes your skin due to having antifungal and
antimicrobial properties responsible for anal itching.
- Eat 3 tbsp of extra-virgin coconut oil regularly. You can also use this oil for cooking food.
- Alternatively, you can rub some warm coconut oil around the affected area certain times a day to relieve itching and burning sensations.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera also provides calming effect to the itching area
as it has soothing properties. It also reduces the inflammation and redness
around the anus. Aloe vera eliminates the irritation causes by the hemorrhoids,
the main cause of anal itching.
- Cut the edges of fresh aloe vera leaf then open it.
- Extract the gel from the leaf and rub it around the anus for 5 minutes.
- Repeat the process after every few hours until the itching is relieved.
5. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is also found good for itchy anus as it contains
anti-irritating and anti-inflammatory properties which makes your anal area
soothing by reducing the inflammation.
- In a bath tub filled with warm water, mix 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal.
- Soak your body in this water for at least 20 minutes.
- Now you can take bath with this oatmeal mixture 2 times a day.
6. Yogurt
Yogurt is successful in treating the yeast infection around
the anal region. Make sure that you take probiotic yogurt; (including good
bacteria) all the types of yogurt might not be beneficial for this purpose. These
bacteria are responsible in stopping the growth of yeast infection.
- Rub some amount of plain yogurt directly on the affected area and let it sit for 30 minutes or you can do this process at night. Rinse it off with warm water and dry the area properly.
- Eat 3 cups of plain yogurt daily.
7. Epsom Salt
An Epsom salt bath is found to be great for reducing the
skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, two key factors of anal itching. It
helps in relieving the burning sensations as well.
- Add 1 or 2 cups of Epsom salt in a bath tub filled with warm water.
- Soak the body in this water for 20 minutes.
- Finally, pat dry the area thoroughly.
- Take this calming bath at least 3 times a week.
Note: Avoid Epsom salt remedy if you have kidney problem or
diabetes.
8. Licorice
Licorice remedy is old age remedy of Ayurveda which helps in
treating the anal itching. Licorice is good for all skin problems, reduces the irritation and soreness.
- Take equal amounts of licorice, rind of Chebulic myrobalan and cardamom. Now roast them slightly.
- Grind the mixture into a find powder.
- Now mix 1/4 tsp of this powder and 1 tsp of honey in a glass of water.
- Drink this solution daily until you feel improvement.
Note: Licorice remedy is not recommended for the pregnant
women and people suffering from kidney problems, hypertension, hypokalemia and
testosterone imbalance.
9. Increase Fiber Intake
Fibers are necessary for your body, they help in digestion.
Once the constipation is fixed, anal itching will automatically be resolved. So
try to increase the fiber intake which will soften the stool and increase its loose.
- Eat fiber contents like beans, carrots, brown rice, prunes, potatoes, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin seeds, fresh fruits, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, broccoli and peas.
- You can also take fiber supplements after consulting your doctor.
10. Avoid Food Allergens
Certain foods may be allergic to your skin and cause irritation
during a bowel movement and thus it leads to the anal itching. There are some
foods that you should avoid eating.
- Foods that are responsible for anal itching are coffee, alcoholic beverages, soda and chocolate.
- Avoid spicy foods like peppers and jalapenos.
- Avoid citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and grapes.
- Avoid these foods for at least 2 weeks, you will see improvement.
Additional Tips
- Avoid scratching; apply a cold compress to get temporary relief from anal itching.
- Use damp toilet paper to clean the anus after a bowel movement. Give a final wipe with dry paper to soak up the excess moisture.
- Washing the anal area would be better after bowel movement.
- Avoid scented or colored toilet paper.
- Do not sit in the same position for hours as it may lead to a buildup of moisture or sweat in the anal region.
- Never use cornstarch on the affected area.
- Manage your stress level, it will help in itching.
