Home Remedies for Perioral Dermatitis (Red Bumps Around the Mouth)
Perioral dermatitis is also known as periorificial
dermatitis which is a kind of inflammatory rash appears on the face around the
mouth.
There is an unknown fact for this problem. However, it seems
according to the experts that it can be caused after using topical steroid
creams for face. Not only the face creams that contain petroleum or a paraffin
base but it can also be appeared with nasal sprays that contain
corticosteroids.
There are some other factors that depend upon this condition
in which bacterial and fungal infections are included, constant drooling, and
use of fluoridated toothpaste, oral contraceptives and sunscreen. Perioral dermatitis
is most commonly appeared in young women but sometimes it also affects men and
children as well. In most of the cases, people who have a history of allergies
or hormonal imbalance can be at the higher risk of suffering from this problem.
The most seen symptom is a rash or red bumps around the
mouth and in the folds around the nose. The bumps are just like the scales and
they may contain pus or fluids inside in it. It will be look like acne
sometimes and gives you burning sensations plus itching, especially when the
rash becomes poorer.
Perioral dermatitis takes about one month to recover but the
treatment is lengthy. When it came to treat the perioral dermatitis, the
American Osteopathic College of Dermatology recommended stopping the use of
topical steroid creams or nasal sprays. So, it would be best if you avoid any
facial creams will be helpful for you.
Also, there are some other useful home remedies that will
surely help you to alleviate the symptoms and give you relief from perioral
dermatitis. So here are the remedies given below:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is the best home remedy for perioral
dermatitis as it fights against bacteria, fungi and viruses that are the cause
of many problems including perioral dermatitis. Apple cider vinegar contains
strong anti-inflammatory properties which provide relief from pain and itching
due to rash.
- Make apple cider vinegar dilute by adding an equal amount of mineral water. Now soak a cotton ball in this solution and apply gently on the affected area, rinse it after 20 minutes then apply some quantity of olive oil to make your skin moisturized. Do this remedy for 3 times a day for 2 week at least.
2. Grapefruit Seed Extract
Grapefruit seed extract is another excellent remedy to treat
perioral dermatitis as it has antiseptic, antifungal and anti-inflammatory
agents that are helpful in making your pain ease and make you feel comfortable.
- Put 6 drops of grapefruit seed extract in 1 tbsp of castor oil or any other carrier oil. Apply it on the affected skin using a cotton ball. Rinse it with water after 20 minutes. Repeat the remedy 3 times a day.
- You can also consume grapefruit seed extract internally in a tablet form. Consult your doctor for the proper dosage.
3. Colloidal Silver
Another easy home remedy is colloidal silver. It is a
natural antibiotic acid which eliminate the toxic substances out of your body
and prevent the growth of germs to protect your skin from perioral dermatitis. People
with sensitive skin can also use it because it is gentle in nature.
- Wash your skin with lukewarm water then pat dry with a clean towel. Now apply 2 drops of colloidal silver on the affected skin and do this remedy twice daily.
- You can also buy colloidal silver ointment from the medical store and can apply on the affected areas.
4. Yogurt
You should take plain yogurt, with no sugar for the purpose
of treating perioral dermatitis. It has soothing effects, being rich in good bacteria;
it works as a powerful antibacterial agent that helps in reducing the bad bacteria from the skin.
- Simply apply a layer of yogurt on your skin and let it dry properly. Rinse it with cold water and do this remedy for 3 times a day for few weeks.
- Another option is to add 1 tsp of Manuka honey to 2 tbsp of yogurt then mix them well together. Apply it on the affected area for 15 minutes then wash it with water. do this daily for few weeks.
- Include yogurt in your daily meals as it helps in activate your immune system to fight against microbes.
5. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is great for thousands of skin problems, including
perioral dermatitis. It contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds,
aloe vera helps in soothing the irritation and inflammation. It restores your
skin’s pH level to prevent breakouts caused by perioral dermatitis.
- Apply fresh aloe vera gel several times a day for few weeks.
- Alternatively, put 4 tbsp of fresh aloe vera gel in a small glass container. Now mix 5 drops of each lavender essential oil and tea tree essential oil. Apply two times daily on the affected area. Store the mixture into this container and keep it in a cool place.
6. Oatmeal
Oatmeal gives a cooling sensation to your skin by reducing
the burning and itching due to perioral dermatitis.
- In a little quantity of water, add half cup of finely ground oatmeal. Apply this paste on the affected skin and leave it for at least 20 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water and do this remedy 2 times a day.
- Another option is to prepare a thick paste from equal amounts of oatmeal and plain yogurt. You can also add a little amount of honey into this paste. Apply this pack on your face and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse it off with water. Do this remedy once daily.
7. Honey
Honey fight against the inflammation associated with
perioral dermatitis. It contains antibacterial and antiseptic qualities that
make it more feasible in reducing the symptoms regarding with perioral
dermatitis.
- Make sure you have Manuka honey for treating the perioral dermatitis. You only need to apply this honey on the affected area.
- Allow it to dry, rinse it off with lukewarm water.
- Repeat twice daily.
8. Calendula
Another useful remedy is calendula. It contains antibacterial,
antifungal and moisturizing qualities which help in soothing the irritation,
itching and inflammation associated with this condition. It also acts as a
speed healer.
- Take a mason jar, put 1 ounce of pure shea butter.
- Put the jar in a pan with a little water, heat it over low flame until the shea butter melts.
- Remove it from heat then add 5 drops of calendula essential oil.
- Mix well and let it sit for 2 hours.
- Use it as a cream for 3 times a day.
9. Turmeric
Another useful remedy is turmeric that can be used in many
natural treatments as it has anti-inflammatory compounds that work to reduce the burning sensations and itching associated with the skin condition.
- Add little amount of turmeric powder to some quantity of water, or honey to make a paste. Apply this paste on the affected skin for 20 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water and repeat the process 3 times a day.
- You can also drink warm turmeric milk two times daily as it will heal your skin from inside out. To prepare turmeric milk, you need to boil 1 glass of milk including 1 tsp of turmeric.
10. Neem Oil
Neem has been used in many treatments related to the skin
diseases since a long period of time in India, especially. It is considered to
be a traditional home remedy to treat the various skin problems like leprosy,
ulcers and rashes.
It contains anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer
properties that readily helps in healing the condition.
- Mix few drops of organic neem oil in 1 tbsp of carrier oil, like jojoba or olive oil. Apply it on the affected area and leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse it off with water and do this remedy once daily for few weeks.
- Also, you can go with the soaps and skin care products containing neem extracts to help your skin gets soothing sensations.
Additional Tips
- Apply zinc oxide cream on the affected areas to reduce the rash or red bumps.
- Take evening primrose oil in the supplement form after consulting the doctor.
- Use only lukewarm water to wash your face.
- Do not use harsh facial scrub.
- Stop using cosmetics and sunscreen.
- Regularly wash your pillowcase and towels in hot water.
- Limit exposure to the sunlight.
