It is the most embarrassing condition if your body is producing excessive or unpleasant sweat which has a bad odor and is an uncomfortable thing for you and others. In fact, mild odor is bearable and normal. The strong odor is produced by the sweat glands at the time when these are overactive but does not contain any type of odor. The unpleasant odor starts to produce when the sweat is getting mixed with bacteria. These bacteria that are the cause of bad odor quickly grow in the warm and moist places.

Some other causes relates to the unpleasant odor are poor hygienic condition of your body, deficiencies of nutrients, gastrointestinal problems, constipation, genetic disorders, liver disease or diabetes and other medical problems. The symptoms that may be seen at the initial stage are unusual and pungent smell that occurs from the body, other symptoms are weight loss, night sweats and cold hands.

Body odor can be temporarily treated with deodorants, perfumes and other over-the-counter medicines and by keeping the hygienic condition good. On the other hand, you can try out the natural home remedies for getting rid of this annoying problem. These remedies are simple and will help killing the bacteria that are the main reason behind body odor. So here are the remedies given below:

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda helps in absorbing the moisture from the skin so that it absorbs the sweat from your body to reduce the odor. It actually works like a natural deodorant for your entire body parts.

  • Mix one tbsp. of baking soda with one tbsp. of lemon juice. Apply this in your underarms and other parts as well where you notice the excessive sweat. Leave it for some minutes then wash it off with water. Try not to scrub then take a shower. Do this remedy once daily.
  • You can also take equal amounts of baking soda and cornstarch to mix together then apply this paste into your underarms to prevent your body from the bad odor. Use this remedy daily.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a powerful astringent which acts upon bacteria to kill them quickly. It also balances the body’s pH level of your skin.

  • Take a cotton ball and soak it in apple cider vinegar then rub it in your underarms. Wait for three minutes then take a bath. Follow the remedy twice daily.
  • Alternatively, you can add one cup of apple cider vinegar to lukewarm bath water. Soak in this water for 10 minutes once daily.
  • Another thing you can do is add two tsp of apple cider vinegar with a little bit of honey to a glass of water. drink this solution three times daily.

3. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains a refreshing smell and that is why thousands of skin care products are available in the lemon flavor. It helps in treating the body odor and also maintains the pH level which in turn makes it difficult for the bacteria to grow more.

  • Take a fresh lemon and cut it into two halves. Rub one half of the lemon in your underarms. You will notice the lemon juice will gradually penetrate into the skin and the lemon peel will be dried out on its own. Take a shower after this process and follow this remedy once daily until the odor is gone completely.
  • Dilute the lemon juice in one-half cup of water if your skin is sensitive then apply it in your underarms using a cotton ball. Leave it for 10 minutes then wash it off with water. do this remedy once daily.

4. Rosemary

Rosemary inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause odor. It also has menthol and chlorophyll which contains the natural deodorant properties that help in neutralizing the body odor and give a nice fragrance to your body.

  • Take one-half cup of dried rosemary leaves into four cups of hot water. Allow it to steep for 10 minutes then add this into your bath water. Soak your underarms in this bath water for about 20 minutes then pat dry your skin. Follow this remedy once daily to get the nice smell throughout the day.
  • Optionally, you can mix 10 drops of rosemary essential oil in one ounce of water then apply it in your underarms as a deodorant.

5. Sage

Sage is a fragrant herb which can be used to combat your body odor. It helps in reducing the sweat gland activity because it is an antibacterial agent that helps in preventing the growth of bacteria.

  • Make your own natural deodorant with five drops of each of sage essential oil, lavender essential oil with two ounces of distilled witch hazel. Mix all of them together and put this solution in a spray bottle and use it as a daily deodorant.
  • Alternatively, add two tbsp. of dried sage to four cups of hot water then allow it to steep for at least 10 minutes. Rinse your underarms daily with this solution and do this two times a day.
  • You can also make a sage tea by steeping one tsp of dried sage in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and enjoy your tea. Make sure you drink only two cups in a day.

Note: this remedy is not recommended to the pregnant and nursing mothers.


6. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel lowers the levels of your skin’s pH and makes it impossible for the odor producing bacteria to survive in your body anymore. It contains astringent properties which help in reducing the production of sweat.

  • Soak a cotton ball in witch hazel.
  • Now dab it in your underarms.
  • Do this whenever your body smells.

7. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains antibacterial and antiseptic properties which readily kills the bacteria found in your skin to eradicate the body odor. Tea tree oil controls the body sweating.

  • Add two drops of tea tree oil into two tbsp. of water.
  • Pour this solution into a spray bottle and use it as a deodorant.

Note: avoid tea tree oil in case of having too much sensitive skin.


8. Turnips

You can also get rid of this bad odor with turnips because it has antibacterial properties to kill the odor-causing bacteria. They are the good source of vitamin C and other useful nutrients that help in fighting against the body odor.

  • Cut about three turnips into small pieces then put them in a blender to make a paste.
  • Put the paste into a sieve and press it with a spoon to extract out the juice.
  • Apply this juice to your underarms.
  • Allow it to dry on its own then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Use this remedy each morning to keep yourself free from body odor and feel fresh.

9. Tomatoes

Tomatoes have antiseptic properties that kill the odor-causing bacteria. Tomatoes shrink the pores and reduce the sweating.

  • Take seven to eight tomatoes and gently crush them.
  • Now press the crushed tomatoes on a sieve and extract the juice.
  • Add this fresh juice to a bucket which is already filled with water.
  • Use it to take a bath.
  • Follow this remedy once daily to control the body odor.

10. Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass contains chlorophyll in a high range and chlorophyll has a deodorizing effect on your body. It helps in eliminating the toxins out of your body.

  • In a cup of hot water, add two tbsp. of wheatgrass juice.
  • Drink it on your empty stomach in the morning.
  • Follow this remedy daily until your body odor is gone completely.

  • Do not wear tight shoes for long time.
  • Always wash your clothes before wearing them.
